Early on the 10th, Jason, my mom and I said goodbye to our US family and arrived in Guatemala City, feeling a bit overwhelmed and culture shocked. After a brief rest, we went to the lobby of the Marriott and waited. I remember holding our video camera and wondering how I was going to keep my composure and catch the moment; that problem fixed itself because I threw it to Jason when I recognized Amanda as she and Luisa stepped out of the taxi, holding our sleeping bundle wrapped inside his blue-fringed blankie.
He rested so comfortably (despite being drenched with sweat--"sweating out the toxins," as they put it). We all took our turns holding him, and I remember thinking then that I never wanted to let him go despite knowing the days would be short.
When we finally got him back to the room, we gave him the full inspection. He was as perfect as his pictures and medical reports indicated.
Our days there seem a lifetime ago, but seeing these pictures again brings back such sweet memories.
