One of the many ways Katie Davis is working for change in Uganda is through micro enterprise. She went to a few women in the displaced and subjugated Karamajong tribe and taught them how to make beautiful necklaces out of recycled magazines. She asked that each woman teach one more, with the direction to keep the process going. Take a look at September 24, 2009 entry on this site for the outcome:

My necklace arrived on Thursday, and already, I had to give it away and order myself another. I shared the story with one of my classes, and they, too, find this to be an ingenious plan. I began by just letting them look at it. Some asked about its origin or the materials used (some of their guesses were India/Central America, shells/wooden beads/clay); they were stunned to know that it was made from something that was ready for the trash.
This is truly a "Teach a man (er, woman) to fish" situation.
**Note that not only do the Karamajong women receive payment for their necklaces; even more of the proceeds are donated to Katie to feed the Karamajong tribe.
