Live and Learn...

It's really amazing what I don't know about this entire process. Even with all of my advisors, I still made with could have been a quite costly error...

Once all documents have been notarized and certified, they are then sent to the Guatemalan embassy (for us, in Washington, DC) for authentication. From the start, everyone advised us to have all documents in triplicate, just in case...

We ended up with some forty documents (counting those triplicates), and we sent the Kentucky ones to Frankfurt, and we hand-delivered the West Virginia documents to Charleston, WV for certification at $5.00 per page. All of those then found their way to a courier in Washington to be taken for authentication at $10.00 each. ..

What I did not know was that only one of each had to be certified and authenticated. Fortunately, I was able to intercept the package in DC so that the $400.00 bill could be cut in third.

Whew! Guess you live and learn!
